The Soul of the World

UCT Lung Institute, Mowbray University of Cape Town Lung Institute, George Street, Mowbray, Observatory, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

A lecture by Julian David.

Carl Jung and Albert Einstein were almost exact contemporaries, three or four years at either end, and both were concerned in their very roots with different aspects of the evolutionary change in human consciousness which was then impending and is still passing through in our own time.

Jung & Film – Maleficent

CG Jung Centre, Rosebank CG Jung Centre, 87 Main Road Rosebank, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

The film's story is an example of what The Guardian's film critic Peter Bradshaw calls "that emerging post-'Wicked' genre, the revisionist-backstory fairytale," but it's affecting. It has a primordial edge that the clumsy filmmaking can't blunt. There are moments in "Maleficent" that are profoundly disturbing, in the way that ancient myths and Grimm fairy tales are disturbing. They strike to the heart of human experience and
create the kinds of memories that young children—young girls particularly—will obsess over, because on some level they'll know, even without the benefit of adult experience, that the film is telling them a horrible sort of truth.

Most of us know them: the broken promises we made to ourselves. Never again, we promise, will we shout at the children, partner or boss. Never again please others only out of fear. Never act out of anger...And then we go and do it all over again. It often feels like someone else did it.
