During this presentation Carel van Wyk will be sharing his experience and understanding of synchronicities during equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP). Synchronicity is discussed from a classical Jungian perspective in the context of EAP as a therapeutic modality.
Jung (1960) defines synchronicity as the … “meaningful coincidence” of two or more incidences, where something other than the probability of chance is involved. In other words, two apparently unrelated incidences co-occur, and it holds significant meaning for the person who experiences it. The psychoid archetype plays a crucial role in the constellation of a synchronicity. Synchronicities can manifest anytime and anywhere and during any therapeutic modality. However, the focus of this presentation is EAP.
Equine-assisted psychotherapy is a branch of animal-assisted therapy and a sub-branch of equine-assisted therapy. The concept “equine-assisted psychotherapy” was coined by Greg Kersten during the early nineteen-nineties.
The therapeutic team involves the horses, a mental health professional and a horse specialist. The mental health professional is concerned with the clients’ emotional health, whereas the horse specialist takes care of the safety of the client and the horses and interprets the horses’ behaviour. The horses play a crucial role as authentic therapists.
