Shadow Work: Facing your demons by Jetthe Fabioola

Shadow Work: Facing your demons

Presented by Jetthe Fabioola – Psychotherapist, Meditation Teacher, MA

Most of us know them: the broken promises we made to ourselves. Never again, we promise, will we shout at the children, partner or boss. Never again please others only out of fear. Never act out of anger…And then we go and do it all over again. It often feels like someone else did it.

Our conscious intentions are over-powered by deeper forces within the psyche. These forces, and the way we work with them is the subject of this lecture. They are ‘the demons’ that we need to feed and transform into good allies that work for us rather than undermine us.

Our inner demons are forces that obstruct our best intentions and hinder us from living the life we want. ‘Feeding Your Demons’ is based on the idea that to heal, we must engage these forces with compassion rather than fighting against them. This method provides a constructive way of working with difficult emotions.

Through case examples the presenter will demonstrate the creative potential of this meditation practice, where body and mind come together in “a dialogue form that puts into effect the alchemical definition of the meditation: An inner colloquy with one’s good angel”, as Jung put it.

More about the lecture

The presenter will also introduce the women behind this method: the American Lama, Tsultrim Allionne, and the 11th Century Tibetan teacher, Machig Labdron. It is Labdron’s Chod, coupled with Jung’s concept of the shadow, which forms the centre of this method. In the process of ‘Feeding Your Demons’ we will reveal the positive aspects of the shadow: its good qualities, normal instincts, appropriate reactions, realistic insights and creative impulses. By appropriating these resources we may be able to put an end to our ‘broken promises’.
