God-images of women with a physical disability – A Jungian Perspective

Many disparaging social attitudes and behaviours relating to both physical disability and to women stunt the psychological and spiritual development of women with a physical disability. One powerful influence stemming from religious communities is the God-images that are promoted regarding disability and women. Certain God-images are restrictive and other images are liberating.
This presentation will focus on the narratives of a few women’s experiences concerning their psychological growth and religious development in regards to their disability and their God-images. As included in the research project their journeys will be presented in their own voices through verbal descriptions and art work.
More About the Presenter
Elizabeth Martiny, (Ph.D) worked several years as a special education teacher and as a therapist in the United States. She received a diploma in analytical psychology at the C.G. Jung Institute, Zürich, Switzerland after which she has been practicing as a Jungian analyst in Gauteng since 1995. She has given numerous seminars to Jungian groups in Gauteng, Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Cape Town. She has presented papers at Jungian conferences: the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and the Association of Graduates of Analytical Psychology of the C.G. Jung Institute, Zürich (AGAP). For her doctoral research at UKZN, she used an interdisciplinary approach of theology and analytical psychology to study God-images of women with a physical disability.
