You are warmly invited to attend our next film evening on Friday 21 April: Mukti Bhawan (Hotel Salvation) (Run time: 1hr 42 minutes) Mukti Bhawan, a movie by Shubhashish Bhutiani, digs deep into a father-son relationship. “Hotel Salvation” is based on an actual hotel at Varanasi with the same name, where people come to attain “Mukti” or salvation. Bhutiani elaborates: ‘The film deals with this idea of salvation but in Hindi, the word ‘salvation’ means mukti. And mukti actually means liberation, freedom, and has a different context beyond the religious. Thus, people will use the word when they get rid of a debt. So, what I tried to do was to explore what ‘salvation’ means to a girl who is twenty-five, a man who is fifty-two and a man in his seventies. We are getting three different levels because for the three generations, the concept of freedom means something else at that point in their lives.’ The father, Daya, has a nightmare, which convinces him that his time has finally come, and he decides to spend the rest of his life in Varanasi, the holy city by the Ganges River, to attain inner peace. Reluctantly, his son, Rajiv, decides to accompany his father, which leads to a profound transformation in both. This transformation also includes Rajiv’s daughter, Sunita, who, with the support of her grandfather, cancels her arranged marriage. Celebration is the foundation of Hotel Salvation, since we don’t only witness the end of Daya’s life; we also witness the rebirth of Rajiv and Sunita, who let go of arbitrary duty and expectation, and instead embrace meaning and purpose.
