In this 2019 film directed by Marielle Heller, Tom Hanks portrays Fred Rogers (the host of a “hokey” children’s television show) in a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Rogers and an investigative journalist, Lloyd Vogel. Vogel (played by Matthew Rhys) is assigned to write a profile of Fred Rogers, an assignment he initially feels is beneath him. During the course of the relationship that develops between the two men, Vogel gradually confronts the trauma he carries from his childhood, and transforms his skepticism and defensiveness into authentic engagement with himself and his family. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood tells a story that “seems too good to be true, and yet, far from defying belief and testing plausibility, the movie does the opposite: it expands, very gradually and incrementally, the sense of possibilities, like turning a light on by rheostat, very slowly, in a dark place and finding, by the end, that it’s shining brightly and displaying events and ideas with a revelatory clarity. And it does so even as the movie’s moods and themes grow ever more sombre.” (Adrian Brody in “The New Yorker”)
